Updated Dec. 15, 8:36 a.m.With all precincts reporting, election results for the Dec. 14 runoff election show candidate Lorenzo Gonzalez led in the race for San Marcos City Council, Place 5, with 50.72% of votes, or 424 ballots.His opponent, Roland Saucedo, fell behind with 49.28% of votes, or 412 ballots.

Saucedo shared on Facebook that he is thankful for everyone who voted for him.

“Unfortunately, I was not successful. However, just know that I am blessed to have met so many people who share the same vision for our community and I promise to continue to serve and advocate for our community as I have done,” Saucedo stated in the post.

Community Impact’s attempts to contact Lorenzo for comment were unsuccessful prior to publication.

A closer look

Early voting results previously showed candidate Saucedo leading in the runoff race for the city council seat with 50.37% of votes, or 273 ballots.

His opponent, Gonzalez, trailed behind him with 46.93% of votes, or 269 ballots.

How we got here

Runoff elections are held when candidates do not meet the majority vote requirement of 50% plus one vote.In the Nov. 5 general election, two other candidates were vying for San Marcos City Council, Place 5—Griffin Spell and Atom Von Arndt. Spell received 24.24% of the votes and Arndt received 17.04% of the votes.

Gonzalez led with 32.43%, or 6,414 of the votes, according to official results and Saucedo trailed behind with 26.29% of the vote. Since Gonzalez and Saucedo secured the majority of votes they qualified to take part in the Dec. 14 runoff election.
