President-elect Donald Trump added two more regions, including one country, to his ‘to-buy’ list on Sunday. After consistently taunting PM Justin Trudeau about making Canada the 51st state, Trump went after the Panama Canal and even Greenland. The Republican has suggested invading Mexico and sanctioning Cuba since winning the 2024 election.
Over the weekend, Trump demaned that the Panama Canal be given back to the United States, accusing Panama of charging excessive rates amid potential Chinese influence.
“The fees being charged by Panama are ridiculous, especially knowing the extraordinary generosity that has been bestowed to Panama by the US,” the president-elect wrote on his Truth Social platform late Saturday. “This complete ‘rip-off’ of our Country will immediately stop….”
Panama’s president José Raúl Mulino ws quick to rebuff his counterpart’s threats by claiming ‘every square meter of the Panama Canal and its adjacent zones is part of Panama’.
Only hours later, on Sunday, Donald Trump suggested that he wants to buy Greenland. The island is owned by the Kingdom of Denmark, but is an autonomous entity.
Announcing PayPal co-founder Ken Howery as his pick for the US ambassador to Denmark, Trump posted: “For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity. Ken will do a wonderful job in representing the interests of the United States.”
Donald Trump’s warning comes days after he claimed that Canadians might want Canada to become America’s 51st state, taunting prime minister Justin Trudeau as ‘Governor Trudeau’. The president-elect reportedly had first suggested the idea during a meeting with the PM at his Mar-a-Lago resort.
Only last month, reports said that Trump’s team is debating ‘how much’ to invade Mexico. The Rolling Stone cited a senior member of the transition team to added that the incoming administration is discussing a ‘soft invasion’ of the neighbour.
