Sonic The Hedgehog 3 Writers Address Whether There Was A Game Plan If Jim Carrey Didn’t Return As Robotnik

In an exclusive interview with ScreenRant, writers Josh Miller and Pat Casey spoke about their plans if Carrey didn’t return for the sequel. According to Miller, Paramount sent a message early on that they were confident that Carrey would come back for the third movie. This made the team mindful of a script that was good enough to get the actor to return, which had to be very distinct from what he had done before. Check out their full quotes below:

Miller: No, I mean, that’s above our pay grade. We don’t entirely know what the producers or Paramount did or didn’t know, but it was presented to us early on that they felt confident they could woo Jim back.

Casey: But with the caveat of like, as long as we make this attractive for him. So definitely, we wanted to come up with something really good that’s not a repeat, because Jim doesn’t want to repeat himself. We had to give him something fresh to play, and giving him two characters, and also really sending Ivo on this emotional journey with a little bit of a redemption arc, teaming Ivo up with Sonic. We wanted to make it so attractive to Jim that when he saw it, there was no way he could say no.

Miller: Which I think is really the coolest thing about Jim is that I feel like, if you look at other franchises, it usually seems like the star gets kind of lazier. You get to the point where, like, “Technically, I’m only in 10 minutes of this movie, but you can string it around so it still feels like I’m an important character.” I feel like Jim just keeps wanting to get challenged. The fact that three movies in now, he had makeup on as both characters, he had to do so much more than he did in the first two films.

Casey: God bless him.

What This Means For Sonic The Hedgehog 3

Jim Carrey Could Have Been Left Out Of The Third Movie

Sonic the Hedgehog 2‘s ending gave Carrey an easy out not to return for another installment. The second movie saw the azure hedgehog face off against Robotnik’s Giant Eggman Robot. When the machine collapses, Robotnik seemingly falls to his death alongside his creation. This would have given Carrey an easy way to bow out of the threequel if he was not interested in the script. This likely added pressure on Casey and Miller to make a really appealing script. Luckily, the writers’ hard work paid off, and Robotnik did return.

RelatedThroughout Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Gerald Robotnik serves as the true villain of the story. This is his evil plan depicted in the movie explained.

Not only did Carrey reprise his role as Dr. Ivo Robotnik in the threequel, but he also stepped in to play his grandfather, Gerald. As Miller noted, “he had to do so much more than he did in the first two films,” dealing with costume and makeup changes and altering his personality and voice. This is a great testament to Carrey as an actor, and how good he is at these highly caricatured films. This idea and performance paid off, with many Sonic the Hedgehog 3 reviews raving about his double role, especially showing the distinction between the characters, including Gerald’s hunger for revenge.

Our Take On Sonic the Hedgehog 3’s Robotnik Return

Robotnik Appears To Have Died Again — But Could He Come Back?

As the franchise continues with the confirmed Sonic the Hedgehog 4, it will be interesting to see whether the writers can repeat their Sonic 3 tactic. The Sonic the Hedgehog 3 ending seemed to show the death of Dr. Robotnik, which was even more direct than the second movie. Casey and Miller have already hinted that he could return for the next movie, so it will be interesting to see whether they write a script that will get Carrey to come back once more after Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
