Rory Sykes, a former Australian child actor with cerebral palsy, tragically died in the Palisades Fire on January 8. The wildfire engulfed his family’s Malibu estate. His mother, Shelley, attempted to save him but failed due to her broken arm and lack of water supply. Firefighters informed Shelley that Rory had succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning.
The devastating Palisades Fire has claimed the life of Rory Sykes, a former Australian child actor who appeared on the British TV show “Kiddy Kapers” in the 1990s.
Sykes, 32, was born blind and diagnosed with cerebral palsy but overcame many challenges, including surgeries and therapies that partially restored his sight and helped him walk.
The tragedy unfolded on January 8 at the family’s 17-acre Malibu estate when embers from the wildfire landed on the cottage roof, sparking a blaze.
Rory’s mother, author Shelley Sykes, recounted the horrifying events on social media, sharing her heartbreak.
“I have to announce the death of my beautiful son to the Malibu fires yesterday. I’m totally heartbroken,” she wrote.
Despite her efforts to save Rory, Shelley was unable to lift him due to a broken arm. “He said, ‘Mom, leave me,’ but no mom can leave their child.”
She tried to douse the flames with a hose but claimed there was no water as the local water district had shut off the supply. Unable to call 911, Shelley drove through smoke-filled roads to find firefighters, who returned to the scene with her only to find the cottage reduced to ashes.
Firefighters informed Shelley that Rory had succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning.

The Palisades Fire ignited on Tuesday, January 7, around 10:30 a.m. in Pacific Palisades. Since then, it has scorched over 20,000 acres across Los Angeles and Malibu, leaving thousands of structures destroyed in its wake. As of Saturday, containment efforts have reached only 11%, according to Fox 11 Los Angeles.
