Media darling Deion Sanders may not remain in the Big 12 for much longer.

Coach Prime reportedly spoke with Jerry Jones on Monday about coaching the Dallas Cowboys after the team parted ways with coach Mike McCarthy.

Sanders confirmed to ESPN’s Adam Schefter that he’s in dialogue with Jones, but he also spoke about how much he loves his current situation.

“To hear from Jerry Jones is truly delightful, and it’s intriguing,” Sanders said. “I love Jerry and believe in Jerry. After you hang up and process it, and think about it, it’s intriguing. But I love Boulder and everything there is about our team, the coaches, our student body and the community.”

Sanders became Colorado’s head coach in December 2022 and has led the Buffaloes through two very different seasons.

In 2023, Colorado started hot, but then fell off a cliff, losing eight of its last nine games to finish with a 4-8 record.

This fall, the Buffaloes were consistent — and more dominant — and they nearly made it to the Big 12 title game. They finished 9-3 in the regular season, then lost to BYU in the Alamo Bowl.

“I’m happy where I am, man,” Sanders said in November, per ESPN. “I’ve got a kickstand down. You know what a kickstand is? … That means I’m resting. I’m good, I’m happy, I’m excited. I’m enthusiastic about where I am. I love it here, truly do.”

Sanders to the Cowboys?

Before Sanders was making waves as a college coach, he was an NFL star.

He played in the league for 14 seasons, five of which he spent with Dallas.

Sanders “(helped) the team win Super Bowl XXX in 1996 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. He remained in north Texas after his playing career ended, and he has maintained a close relationship with the Jones family,” ESPN reported.

Sanders has not yet had a formal interview with the Cowboys about the head coach opening. A source told ESPN that Sanders and Jones are expected to continue their somewhat informal dialogue.

Another former Cowboy, Troy Aikman, made waves Monday night by saying that the coaching position in Dallas isn’t very attractive.

“As far as a coveted job, I don’t know that that’s accurate. I do think the Cowboys are obviously a high-profile team, whoever is head coach of that team is certainly going to draw a lot of attention, but I think most football people that take over as a head coach want to do that on their terms, and I think that’s hard to do (in Dallas),” Aikman said.
