Details about the show being postponed came out earlier this week.
Euphoria Season 3 has been delayed indefinitely, leaving audiences of the show clamoring for any titbit of information that can come their way. The delay has come largely as a reaction to the unavailability of the cast and crew to come together for Season 3, given that Season 2 launched its stars into the mainstream.
HBO has come out with an official statement about the state of production for Euphoria, which might be disappointing to those looking forward to Season 3 of the show. However, a ton of information has come out about the production aspect of the show and what HBO wishes to do going forward.
Euphoria’s production seems creatively stalled
Currently working on the third draft of the script, as revealed by Variety, Sam Levinson had already produced a draft that HBO liked, which allegedly had a five-year time skip and relegated Zendaya‘s character to the relative background, working as a PI.
However, given that Zendaya is an executive producer on the show, the script received significant input from her, which once again changed the way the story was going to go ahead. Other facts would merit a re-write for these scripts as well, chief among them the untimely passing of Angus Cloud, who allegedly featured heavily in the scripts. Zendaya’s inputs were taken into account, but were not to HBO’s writing, prompting a second re-write by Levinson.
The cast is bound contractually for a third season, but HBO has made a statement, giving the caste the year to pursue other projects. An HBO spokesperson said:
“HBO and Sam Levinson remain committed to making an exceptional third season. In the interim, we are allowing our in-demand cast to pursue other opportunities.”
This would imply, as the article also states, that filming would probably not resume before 2025, and the episode count might also be greatly reduced (but HBO is open to more if required). With all these creative stalls on the project, HBO was also open to exploring options other than Sam Levinson, but the cast made it clear that they would want Levinson on board.
The aim is to produce scripts that everyone is happy with before production begins
As the scripts go through rewrites as per the directions of Zendaya and HBO, with the aim being that scripts are perfect,l with everyone satisfied with the story, before they are turned into episodes for the show. It is of immense importance to Sam Levinson that everyone is happy with the script and its contents.
HBO is expected to return to the stars with a plan forward in October of this year when it will be revealed what the show will look like going forward, once all parties are happy with the scripts that have come forward.
While Zendaya proposed changes to the script approved by HBO and HBO was not happy with the changes made to the script, it does not mean that Season 3 of the show is in development hell just yet. The season is definitely happening, given that it is the studio’s biggest pull for Gen Z audiences, something that makes the show a priority for HBO.
