Two Dead After Small Plane Crashes Into California Warehouse

A light aircraft crashed into a warehouse in California on Thursday, killing two people and injuring a further 19. The aircraft hit the roof of a warehouse building in Orange County at around 2 p.m., sparking an explosion and fire at the scene.

A home-built Van’s Aircraft RV-10 crashed into a warehouse building near Fullerton Municipal Airport on Thursday, reports NBC Los Angeles. Two people on board the plane died in the crash, however it’s not yet known how many people were inside the four-seat craft at the time of the crash.

When it hit the building, the small aircraft cut a hole in the roof and exploded. The explosion injured 19 people, with 11 of them requiring hospital treatment as a result of their injuries:

“People are just shaken over the situation,” said Mark Anderson. “It was just a large boom, and then one of the people went out and said, ‘Oh my gosh, the building’s on fire.’”

Police identified the plane as a home-built Van’s Aircraft RV-10 with seating for four people. The pilot appeared to be returning to the airport after takeoff, police said. It was not clear how many people were onboard the plane.

“A single-engine Van’s RV-10 crashed in Fullerton, California around 2:15 p.m. local time on Thursday, Jan 2. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will investigate. The NTSB will be in charge of the investigation and will provide all updates,” wrote the FAA in a statement to NBCLA.

Around 90 seconds after taking off from the Orange County airport, the pilot of the experimental aircraft radioed into the tower saying the plane would need to make an emergency landing, reports KTLA5. The crew then turned back towards the Fullerton Municipal Airport before crashing into the warehouse building.

Following the crash, black smoke was seen billowing from the building by locals and firefighters were soon called to the scene to extinguish the blaze.

The crash in California is the latest in a long line of aircraft disasters to have hit in recent weeks. As well as the collision in Orange County, a commercial airliner overshot a runway in South Korea killing 179 people and another plane crashed in Azerbaijan. Another light aircraft also broke up over Tennessee last year, killing three people.
