Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, The United Arab Emirates, Jordan and others came back with a plan of their own for Gaza just 10 days ago – and it’s a pretty good deal by any standard.
They say they will fund the rebuilding of the enclave while keeping its people in situ. They will replace Hamas with a technocratic Palestinian administration and even cause the terrorist group to disarm, while providing peacekeepers.
Oh, and as a special sweetener to help make America great again, Saudi Arabia says it will make inward capital investments of some $600 billion in the US.
In return, all Mr Trump needs to do is bring Israel to the table and agree a sustainable path to a permanent peace through a two state solution.
But this, of course, is the worst nightmare for Israel’s right. There can be no greater Israel if such a deal is done. House prices – already at ludicrous levels throughout Israel – will continue to soar.
There is something deeper going on too, in the Israeli psyche.
The fantasy of a mass exodus from Gaza has gradually been replaced over the last month by a realisation that power in the region now increasingly resides in the Gulf.
