NEW ORLEANS — There are six players with the last name Jones on the Georgia football roster.
It’s fair to say Parker Jones was the least known of them heading into the Sugar Bowl.
That changed early in the second quarter when one of Georgia’s biggest plays in its 23-10 loss to Notre Dame in the CFP quarterfinal drew a curious flag.
It came after Gunner Stockton hit Arian Smith on a 67-yard strike in a scoreless game.
A penalty was called for sideline interference and the replay showed that walk-on Parker Jones bumped into an official running down the field.
The 15-yard penalty pushed Georgia from the Notre Dame 11 to its 26.
Georgia settled for a 41-yard field goal.
“Very unfortunate,” coach Kirby Smart said afterwards. “I think it was a player, from what I’ve been told, in the white, and the white is reserved for the officials. That’s a safety concern. Most of the time, they’ll grant you a warning on that, but it was not — it was a situation where it cost us 15 yards. We still had first and 10 and didn’t take advantage of it. “
So who is Parker Jones?
He’s a 5-foot-11, 165-pound redshirt sophomore from Deerfield-Windsor School in Albany.
He was in a No. 39 jersey, but not dressed out to play. He was not listed as playing in any games this season unlike Cash Jones, Demello Jones and Kyon Jones. Freshman linebacker Kris Jones dealt with injury this season and Noah Jones was the backup punter Thursday.
Parker Jones’ georgiadogs.com bio was coming up with an error message after the flag, but later was working.
It was the most glaring of five penalties for 41 yards for Georgia.
“Again, I call those things undisciplined, self-imposed wounds that you lose momentum on,” Smart said. “So, it’s just something you can’t have happen.”
